Cancer as an Insufficiency of Cellular Energy (ICE): Therapeutic Approaches Based on Enhancing the Alternative Cellular Energy (ACE) Pathway
نویسنده
چکیده
In spite of the expenditure of many billions of dollars, cancer will soon become the major cause of human death other than aging [1]. Much of the funding allocated to cancer research has merely sustained the vested interests of those promoting the use of chemotherapeutic drugs designed to selectively kill cancer cells [2]. Incremental advances in understanding the biochemistry of cancer cells are used to justify major investments in developing new compounds; most of which have only marginal additional benefits over existing drugs. Virtually all chemotherapeutic drugs have toxic side effects, which are sometimes only belatedly recognized. These can include impaired cognition (chemo-brain) [3] and the induction of new cancers [4].

Insufficiency of Cellular Energy (ICE) May Precede Neurodegeneration in Alzheimer’s Disease and Be Treatable via the Alternative Cellular Energy (ACE) Pathway
The term neurodegeneration emphasizes the destruction of neuronal cells as the primary explanation of many major neurological illnesses, including Alzheimer’s disease. Specialized functioning of cells requires more cellular energy than is needed for basic cell survival. Cells can acquire energy both from the metabolism of food and from the alternative cellular energy (ACE) pathway. The ACE path...

Living organisms derive energy for cellular activities through three primary mechanisms. The first is photosynthesis, which is restricted to plants and certain bacteria. It uses energy in sunlight to combine carbon dioxide with water to form carbohydrates plus oxygen. The second is chemical energy, which is obtainable by all organisms from the cellular metabolism of carbohydrates and other orga...

متن کاملThe ACE Pathway in Comparison to the Immune System in the Defense Against Infectious Diseases
A basic tenet of biology is that resistance against ongoing infectious diseases is solely provided by the immune system. The major emphasis in humans and animals is on the protective role of the adaptive immune response. This response comprises antibodies secreted by B lymphocytes and both cellular cytotoxicity and the synthesis of various cytokines by T lymphocytes. These activities lead to th...
متن کاملThe Role of Mammalian Target of Rapamycine Signaling Pathway in Central Nervous System Cancers: A Review
Mammalian mechanistic target of rapamycine (mTOR) is a conserved serine/threonine kinase in the cellular PI3K/Akt/mTOR signaling pathway. This pathway is modified by cellular alterations such as level of energy, growth factors, stresses, as well as the increased environmental level of cancerous cytokines. In general, increase of this kinase protein function is seen in various types of cancers, ...
